Urban Development Framework
In August 2004 Roger Evans and Associates in partnership with Faber Maunsell, were commissioned by South Somerset District Council to produce an Urban Development Framework (UDF) for Yeovil Town Centre to articulate the objectives and aspirations set out in the Yeovil Vision.
The challenge is to make a step change in the quality of the town centre, think big and be ambitious for the future.
Following extensive consultation the UDF was published in September 2005.
The purpose of the UDF is to provide a robust and clear development strategy for delivering the objectives and aspirations of the, through a spatial framework, with specific urban design guidance for key strategic sites.
The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 introduced major changes to the development planning system. Structure Plans, Local Plans and Supplementary Planning Guidance will be replaced by a new system of Regional Spatial Strategies (RSSs) and Local Development Frameworks (LDFs). The LDF for South Somerset together with the RSS for the South West will form the statutory development plan for the District.
In the context of Yeovil a new Local Development Document – South Somerset District Council is producing the Yeovil Town Centre Area Action Plan with a proposed adoption date of February 2011.
The Area Action Plan will deliver regeneration and development proposals as part of the Vision for Yeovil Town Centre. It will allocate specific development sites and include proposals for shops and services, transport, community use and housing. It will also provide policy and design guidance for planning proposals.
