Red Carpet Awards Evening Celebrates Local Unsung Volunteers

A partnership with Stanchester Media Arts Trust brought the glamour of a Hollywood awards evenings straight to Cineworld in Yeovil to celebrate the hard work of local volunteers who help to make activities available for young people in the district.

The 'Young People Salute their Volunteer Workers' evening – gave out five prestigious awards after guests were greeted with a champagne reception.
 
Rosemary Heath-Coleman, from Queen Camel, and Pastor Steve Gray, from Crewkerne were awarded the Female and Male Volunteer of the Year awards, with South Petherton's Hannah Strugnell taking the award for Young Volunteer of the Year.
Yeovil's Newtown Youth Action Group won the Youth Group of the Year award, and Dana King's districtwide 'Time out Together Team' took the biggest volunteer 'Oscar' – the Youth Organisation of the Year award.
 
Jay Lewin, Young Peoples Officer at South Somerset District Council said, "These volunteers are the unsung heroes of the district. They dedicate so much of their time for free and it's important to realise that without these people we'd have a lot fewer clubs and groups running in South Somerset."
 
Chairman of South Somerset District Council, Councillor Ian Martin, presented the awards.
 
Cllr Sylvia Seal, South Somerset's Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Well Being says, "I hope these awards make a real difference by recognising the hard work and raising the profile of volunteers. They are crucial in keeping young people in our communities active and thriving and we fully support their hard work."
