Nominations Sought for Sports Award Evening

A rugby legend will be at hand to help celebrate local sporting heroes at the third South Somerset Sport Awards on Thursday, 26 November.

Nigel Redman, former British and Irish Lions and England rugby player, is special guest at the event which aims to recognise and reward the contributions made by coaches, volunteers and performers across South Somerset.

Now South Somerset District Council - which organises the awards ceremony - is urging clubs, supporters, friends and families to nominate their coaches, volunteers and clubs for a chance to win one of nine prestigious awards to be given out at the event.

The evening - which is being supported by AgustaWestland - will be held at Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford. Categories include Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Junior Performer of the Year and winners will each receive a trophy and a cash prize.

Jenny Phipps, Sport Development Officer at South Somerset District Council says, “Local businesses and organisations have sponsored each of the nine awards and we are now asking supporters to put forward their nominations for the categories. Last year, there were nearly eighty nominations which meant that dozens of valued sportspeople were put forward by those who wanted to show their thanks. This year we want even more people to be recognised for their contributions.

“Nominating is easy. There is a simple form to fill out, explaining what award they want their sportsperson to be nominated for, and why they deserve to win. We want to know about the work they do for sport in the district.  As well as volunteers there are also awards for sports clubs and performers.”

Nominations can be made now online at www.southsomerset.gov.uk/sportawards or by telephoning South Somerset District Council’s Sport Development Team on 01935 462543 for a paper copy.

Nominations must be in by the deadline on Monday 26 October.
