Ham Hill Goes Interactive - New Visitor Website Launched
A three year Heritage Lottery grant to improve access to Ham Hill Country Park has helped to launch a state-of-the art website.
Visitors to the site -unveiled February 2009 - are encouraged to use the series of interactive maps which reveal the historical, geological and wildlife points of interest across Ham Hill and use the guides to help explore the park itself.
Event listings, video clips, photographs, apprenticeship opportunities and information on bushcraft courses are also available.
The site has been set up with the expertise of South Somerset District Council’s Education and Access Officer Grace Hall, who is based at the Ham Hill Centre.
She commented, “This is just one of the things we have been working on to get people involved with the park. The new site is fully interactive - you can download quizzes, find out about becoming a volunteer ranger, use the site for school or research projects, get details on upcoming events and scroll through the timeline to discover Ham Hill’s past.”
The three-year Heritage Lottery funding programme has already enabled South Somerset District Council to set up the much-used Ham Hill Education Centre, which runs school visits, guided walks, junior ranger days, orienteering, media shows and tailor-made community group bookings. An audio trail around the park will also be set up through the scheme.
Cllr Sylvia Seal, South Somerset’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Well Being added, “We know thousands of people come to enjoy the park every year and one of our aims is to make it even more accessible, to all people - so we hope the website will be very well used.
“There is so much information around the park’s history, environment and features. You can find out how and why the ramparts were formed, and what it used to look like hundreds of years ago. It’s important that people find out more about local history and make use of the excellent facilities on their doorsteps.”
