Flying the Flag for the Armed Forces
Dozens of staff and councillors from South Somerset District Council joined RNAS Yeovilton personnel, members of the Yeovil and District Royal British Legion, Yeovil and District Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and the Yeovil Squadron of the Air Training Corps to raise a flag in support of the Armed Forces today.
The special flag raising ceremony, was led by South Somerset District Council’s Chairman and ex Naval serviceman Ian Martin, was held at 10.30am in unison with hundreds of local authorities across the country to mark the build up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.
The flag, which will now fly for a week at the council’s Brympton Way offices in Yeovil, is designed to show support for the country’s Armed Forces, past, present and future.
Cllr Martin commented, “The sacrifices that our armed forces make in defending our country should be recognised and supported by us all. By raising the flag simultaneously with other local authorities across the UK we are helping to demonstrate our appreciation of all our service personnel, past and present.
“I must give my thanks to all the military representatives, staff and councillors of South Somerset District Council who attended the ceremony.”
A moments’ silence was held prior to the raising of the flag.
