NEWS: Construction works on-site February 2010
Yeovil is to start the New Year with a £7m mixed development of one of the town centre's most historic glove making buildings after discussions were finalised in early January.
The scheme includes two new local shops with apartments above and a range of family homes offering a choice of 2, 3 or 4 bedroom accommodation. The glove factory will be refurbished to create a cafe/restaurant, with a picturesque outdoor courtyard eating area facing Summerhouse Terrace and Old Station Approach.
Work will begin in earnest after site clearance by early February and could be complete within two years.
South Somerset District Council and sustainable developers Zero C concluded final agreements this week.
The preparations for the new promenade will include the creation of a new landscaped stream alongside the path, as well as enclosing an unsightly concrete ditch to create the first part of a new cycle way, which should be complete by this summer.
Construction will then begin on nine town houses facing Yeovil Country Park and a new retail unit beside the former glove factory with developers working to a November or December completion date.
The redevelopment of Foundry House itself will follow. In all, the Yeovil Vision-headed scheme will include 27 houses, 10 apartments, two new shops and a third shop with accommodation above. Office space will be created above the restaurant in the glove factory building.
Cllr Tony Fife, Yeovil Vision Portfolio Holder and member of South Somerset District Council commented, "This is just what Yeovil needs. South Somerset District Council is investing in a high quality scheme to continue the regeneration of the town centre.
"This is a landmark site and links in with the newly improved South Western Terrace and Reckleford areas. It is part of a much larger picture that will help deliver the town's potential.
"We have worked closely with the developers to negotiate a viable scheme and it's a great example of public and private sectors working together."
The development will provide new housing and retail opportunities whilst creating an improved link from the town centre into the eastern end of Yeovil Country Park.
Cllr Fife added, "This has been one of the most complex sites to develop I have ever experienced, in the oldest part of the town with so many services to divert. We have worked through these one by one and now we can hand the site over and Zero C can get going.
"It will kick-start further improvement schemes around the town as per the Yeovil Vision, and will set the precedent for quality development."
Kim Slowe, Managing Director of Zero C holdings said, "Zero C are delighted to be developing this very high profile and important site in the heart of the town. We see it as an excellent opportunity to develop a scheme that represents the very best in urban design and sustainability."
Temporary diversions of the cycle route and footpath will be put into place to avoid disruption to either route.
