Petters Way Regeneration – Creative Media Industries

A future mixed-use town centre development scheme utilising the existing Octagon Theatre and Penn Hill Park as a catalyst for regeneration.

Specific consideration will be given to the development of a themed regeneration around the arts and creative media sectors.

As part of a wider regeneration scheme consideration will also be given to the decking of Petters Way car park.

In 2007 South Somerset District Council commissioned a feasibility appraisal to assess the future options to develop and enhance the Octagon Theatre, which is the largest theatre in Somerset.

Findings from this study indicate the benefits of creating a new studio theatre, exhibition gallery, studios and meeting function rooms.

Anticipated improvements include:

  • a future mixed-use development, which will revitalise an important town centre site
  • much of land already in public ownership enabling future re-development opportunities
  • enhanced links to existing assets such as the Octagon Theatre and Penn Hill Park
  • additional car-parking spaces close to town centre.

Left Grant Sellen, Artistic Manager, Octagon Theatre said, "The Yeovil Vision and the creation of a cultural quarter is an excellent opportunity to provide first class facilities for all the people of Yeovil and the surrounding area. By developing the existing Octagon building to include a studio theatre, purpose built gallery, workshops, rehearsal rooms and an increased catering function, and linking it with the Petters Way improvements, it will become the venue of choice for both local people and visiting artists."  Right
